Craigslist eBay Scam Details – Don’t trust Richard Grills of London with Western Union Money Transfer- It’s a scam

October 15th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

One of the victims of the Craigslist NFL Tickets scam (see my previous post by clicking here) was kind enough to share with me some of the details of the transaction. I’m posting them here in hopes of warning others about the scam. She was told by the scammer to contact Richard Grills, an alleged eBay agent in London. The address she received was 25 Northcote Rd. London. It appears the address is real, though I don’t know who it belongs to. She sent the money via Western Union, which is also a red flag! Don’t ever ever send money through Western Union or something like it to someone you don’t know.

Obviously you should never enter into any Craigslist transaction unless it’s face to face with the person or you’ve received and inspected the goods before paying the seller. But especially do not use a third party to handle the money! If you’ve found this post by searching the name Richard Grills, don’t trust him.

UPDATE: Another Scammer in the UK that as part of this scam collects the Western Union money transfers is Crystal Delapena of London, UK.

THANK YOU– you saved me $600. I saw your blog and avoided someone named Rodney Chandler who was listed on Craigslist under Blujade725@gmail.com. He said he had world series tickets and I got an email “confirmation” from safe.purchase@representative.com. I googled the site and found your information indicating it was a scam. Well, the scammers wasted my time–but at least you warned me in time.

You saved me from a scam as well!
Trying to buy NFL tickets on craigslist and received an email from purchase.safe@representative.com, but originally from diana11light@gmail.com telling me to send money through western union to someone named:

    Name: Tim Sawa
    Address: 809 Romford Road
    City: London
    Zip Code : E12 6EA
    Country: United Kingdom

It sounded fishy so I googled it and your blog came up.
    Thank you.

I HATE SCAMMERS!!! Thank you, Thank you for posting this and saving me $500!!

I recieved the same exact e-mail requesting payment through Western Union for 4 tickets. The craigslist post was by Howard Bates. However, the person in London supposedly doing the “transaction” through ebay and Western Union had listed the following contact info:
    Name: Jordan Ells
    Address: 28 Lewisham Rd.
    City: London
    Zip Code: SE13 7PA
    Country: United Kingdom

I was shopping for Patriots tickets on craigslist and contacted a seller who ended up being a total scam just like the others all of you have posted about! This clown says he’s in London and wants me to send funds via and ebay “agent” who uses Western Union. It smelled fishy immediately and your posts confirmed it. I told the guy to send me an invoice for the tickets via paypal and never heard a peep from him again (shocking huh).

Thanks for the info I was shopping for Bears tickets on Craigslist and ran into the same thing. She asked for my full name, address, and ebay Id. I hope giving her this stuff will not hurt anything because I already did. and she sent me the ebay purchase confirmation. I haven’t sent any money and don’t intend to but just a little worried that I screwed up in giving her my address!

So I was talking to this guy from Georgia he was selling a 2007 honda crv for 2900 bucks great deal right. He told me through e-mail that he was being deployed back to afghanistan and needed to get rid of the vehicle asap. Seemed too good to be true well normally they are. I was getting everything lined up to send an agent money in London by the name of sara henry. which i thought was weird i had talked to the ebay team through emails asking why i had to send the money out of the country, i figured i would research a bit more and this when i found everyone’s blog on this same subject. People are low and karma’s a bitch. Anyway i did not send the money i went with my gut instinct and like i said if somethings to good to be true it normally is. A. Brown out!!!!!!

    Hello all,

I am a television news reporter in New York City who is doing a story on these craigslist/ebay ticket scams. I would like to interview one or a few of you for the story. This is a great way to get the word out about this money-losing fraud to a huge audience.

    My email is chris.glorioso@nbcuni.com

I look forward to hear from you!!

Just questioning if eBay permits you to sell sports tickets online? Do you know if you will discover any restrictions based on what country you are in?

My parents have just referred to as me and asked if i could “get rid” of their two tickets to a concert as they wont be able to make it because of one more family event.

Apart from asking pals etc, i thought ebay would be an excellent place to market them.

But whats ebay’s policy on marketing tickets? Ive heard alot about it on the news but ive forgotten what happened.

and if it matters, the concert is within this coming month

Thanks in advance for your advice.

The name REBECA LISKA is a SCAM! I was almost taken by her and the ebay money handling scam when trying to order race tickets from Craigslist. Beware of e-mails from this lady. Her e-mail is rebeca11liska@gmail.com.

    February 17th, 2011 at 09:34 | #12

    @Ben
Saw the same name (Rebeca Liska) when looking for basketball tickets. Got the reply looking for my name address and ebay id – sounded too fishy so I let it go – sounds like that was a good idea.

  13. February 20th, 2011 at 19:12 | #13

Rebeca Liska is a scam!! She tried to have me wire money to London via western union saying that it was an “eBay agent”. She contacted me through craigslist and then sent me a fake email supposedly coming from eBay. The website looks legitimate but don’t be fooled. Hopefully he/she won’t waste anyone else’s time.

I also got the same offer last week when i was trying to buy tickets to ULTRA Music fest in Miami. An ad on craigslist. The person that responded introduced himself as Brent Flanary, CA (brent12flanary@gmail.com). Also suggested to send money via Western Union (red flag) to

eBay’s verified payment agent address:nName: Jeff Dyson
    Address: 162 Bexley Road
    City: London
    Zip Code : SE9 2PH
    Country: United Kingdom

(in the UK – another red flag)

the email was composed as HTML file with both PayPal and Ebay logos in it. (triple red flag, it is either Paypal, or Ebay. Plus the seller stated he can’t accept paypal at the moment).

Be careful out there, if it looks fishy – it probably is.

My son just lost $600 plus $50 to Western Union for the NBA Finals scam. He sent the money to London. Exact same email that Cynthia got. However, we have some pretty sharp IT people tracing their emails. They tried pretty hard to hide their IP addresses. Time to shut these folks down permanently.

@Duke – The scammer actually tried to comment on this blog twice because of how much money this blog has cost him/her. With each comment, I captured his IP address. I’ll send you an email with more details. I should also add a “contact me” option on this blog so that people can contact me for more information.

    United Kingdom

    To all,

After using my better judgment and doing some searching through the net I found this blog on scams. I am not sure if this is one but feel that it is. This purchase request is a ebay item that was posted for buying the new Ipad 2. You have to buy in bulk of 2 or more. 2 would cost you 1000, 5 for 2000 or 10 for 3500. This sounded like a dream come true since I want one so badly. Every thing looked good to me. This seller is on ebay selling many items and has a feed back score of over 40000 and is a power seller. The only thing that made me start searching for information on her is that she is from London and can only except Western Union payment. The item on ebay is posted that paypal is excepted. After emailing her with my name and ebay name she said that ebay would send me a check out conformation. After receiving an email from ebay I opened it up and every thing looks legit with a ebay logo for buyers protection and every thing. I asked her why she could not except paypal and she stated that her paypal account will not handle a large money exchange. So I was going to send her the money today for the items thank GOD that I found this blog. I dont understand one thing though is how this person is on ebay with such a huge feedback score. Thing just dont add up. Any thoughts? Thank you everyone for your post.

Sounds like same people and scam for FSU v OU tickets from Fred Jones fred01jones@gmail.com. Wanted name, full address, and ebay id. Said he was from Minneapolis and even misspelled through “trough” like above. Seemed fishy, so asked for a phone number and he never replied. Given no phone number and that his email timestamp in the chain put him 7 hours ahead of EDT, it seems to me that they are operating out of Europe.

Admin, was the IP address a U.S. one?

I also inquired about Steelers tickets on Craigslist and got this response from “Melissa Frank” This is what the email said looks shady:

I am asking $500 for 4 tickets for one Pittsburgh Steelers home game in section 133 row F, including shipping. Just let me know for which game are you interested.(for two or more games I will make you a discount)
I will send you hard tickets as well I will forward the tickets via e-mail . In case you are unfamiliar they work just like regular tickets, just print out the attachments on the e-mail and those are your tickets (the barcodes are scanned upon entry like any other ticket).

    Steelers vs Jaguars 10/16
    Steelers vs Patriots 10/30
    Steelers vs Ravens 11/6
    Steelers vs Bengals 12/4
    Steelers vs Browns 12/8
    Steelers vs Rams 12/24

I have recently moved to London, UK with work and I will miss the games. I’m not a broker I’m very well paid here and I’m not looking to make extra money using these tickets.
I intend to use the security provided by eBay, because they have a great exchange program.
The transaction will be fully under eBay surveillance, giving us both security and insurance
This way you will actually pay for the tickets after you receive them, considering that the funds
will be held in their trust account and released to me only after you accept and confirm the delivery
Just get back with your full name and full shipping address and I will get everything started as soon as possible, then eBay will contact you with more further instructions.
I usually use Paypal but, because in this moment I share the same paypal account with my husband I have some problems with him right now.

Very interesting!!!! I answered an email on craigslist for Wisconsin-Nebraske football tickets – 4 for $500. When it came to payment they said it had to go through an ebay agent and to an adress in London. The guy gave the name Sean Hartnett and his email address is: sseanhartnett@gmail.com. I was supposed to send the money via Western Union to: Justin Baker, 38 Crown Street, London, UK. I started to do it and then thank god cancelled it because it didn’t seem right. So bewore of the above name and email as it sounds just like all the other scams.

“Melissa Frank” is a scammer. I contacted the same person about Eagles tickets and responded to the same exact email (only the games listed were Eagles games.) I said I would be interested in 2 different games and asked what the discount would be. The person responded with:

“$800 including western union fee and shipping
I usually use Paypal but, because in this moment I share the same paypal account with my husband I have some problems with
him and I can’t use my paypal(that’s why I don’t have them listed on eBay)
You will need to wire the money to the ebay agent. They will give me the money after you get the tickets(you will have 3
    days to inspect them)
email me your shipping info and Buyer Protection will contact you soon
    thank you”

Just get back with your full name and full shipping address and I will get everything started as soon as possible, then eBay will contact you with more further instructions.
I usually use Paypal but, because in this moment I share the same paypal account with my husband I have some problems with him right now.
Please email me at your earliest convenience,

    Thank you

    @Steve D.
    Hello Everyone,
Just thought that I would do my part and share this with you.
I too saw ads for Eagles tickets on craigslist. I am a licensed private investigator not that it matters because anybody could fall for this scam. I responded with a fictitious name and address and got back the same letter everybody’s sharing. I wrote back with some pretty foul language about his mother and that was enough to trick him into writing back with what appears to be his real e-mail, aiciaici1@aol.com.

I will send you hard tickets as well I will forward the tickets via e-mail . In case you are unfamiliar they work just like regular tickets, just print out the attachments on the e-mail and those are your tickets (the barcodes are scanned upon entry like any other ticket).

I almost fell victim to the same Melissa Frank in trying to purchase tickets to a Steelers game. This “Melissa” was taking too long to get back with me with the details so I started researching. This was after I she started talking about using and Ebay broker. There is also another person posing as a Jennifer posting ads. I responded to 2 ads for tickets in totally different sections and got the exact same reply. I reported them both to Craigslist as possible scams.

Why does the Federal Government an FBI allow these Scammers to operate? Given where they are operating from they are clearly getting funds to support terrorism.
